    Unable to boot
    « on: April 24, 2009, 08:50:12 AM »
    Hi there,

I am having a problem that puzzle me a bit, I was using my computer and had some problems with it, I think that it was the motherboard or the CPU but it was not. It was a dammed  virus !!! So I did reformat and reinstall Windows XP and upgraded it up to SP3. Everything was looking good, my son in law gave me his old motherboard and CPU (he just changed them) they were : Asus A8N SLI deluxe motherboard and a AMD Athlon 3700 CPU.

I installed everything back on the new board and had some problem making the computer recognize my HDD (I have 3 of them in my machine 2 IDE and 1 SATA) anyway finaly everything was OK, but I cannot boot from the HDD and even not with the CD/DVD drive and I am using an original window XP CD. All things in the computer look to be OK, and it beep only once when it start, the POST is OK too.

One thing that I should mention is that I tried to reinstall my disks in my old computer and it do the same, I did changed the IDE cables.

What could be the problem here

Sorry for my english that is not that great but at least I am trying...

Thanks to everyone who could help me.

so the drives are or are not being detected?

Are you trying to boot from the IDE drives or the SATA Drives?

Try with just the hard drive you want to install windows on, having both the Main HDD and CD/DVD as Master and slave respectively on IDE 0 and installing, then adding your other 2 IDE + 1 Sata drive after that.

Since you have swapped MBoards and CPU's you can't expect XP to boot properly...it's looking for all your old hardware....
    Repair Install of XP

Read thru it and print a copy for reference...if done properly all your data and apps will be intact.
Once it boots properly install the new drivers...MBoard chipset drivers need to go FIRST.

      For Kurtiskain,

All my drives are being detected and I am booting from my master IDE disk but it does not work and when I try booting with the original windows XP disk it stay on a black screen after I received the message saying that the install program is examinig my configuration.

I will try to plug only my master hard (the one with the boot on it) and my cd/dvd and see

      For Patio

I do not have access to any drive so, sorry Patio, but I can't do the Repair Install of XP

      Thanks for the help guy's

      I don't understand...
The repair install uses the XP CD.
You should disconnect other hard drives and have just the boot drive with XP on it installed until the repair is done.

I did what you told me guy's and it look like I have a bad or broken HDD (the one with the boot on it, so I took another one and format it and install windows on it and it look like it will be OK, so I'll have to check my HDD that I used before (old C:)

Thanks for the help I was beginning to think I was getting crazy or dumb.

If you hook up the old drive as a slave you should be able to copy you're important data from it...
Be ready though...if it was failing you may get only one chance.
It's best to copy/move the data to your good drive rather than burning it...burning works the HDD harder and you can always burn it at a later date...
        Best of luck.
