NEW HARD DRIVE --- PC STILL SLOW??
    « on: April 27, 2009, 08:01:42 AM »
Hi everyone & thanks for always being there for me.  ;D

I HAD a sloooow pc and went thru many steps with you all a while back. You all said I had very little space left and should soon get a new HD. Well....you were all right  and it finally crashed.  :'(

A month ago, I got a new hard drive installed. Oddly, the PC is still very slow. (I feel like I am on dial up!!)

Might the PC have tons of bloatware? If yes, how do I know what to get rid of when I really don't know what most the programs are in this thing. In other words, even by the name, I am not sure what they do or if I use them or if I need them to make pc run.  (I HAVE LITTLE PC SMARTS.....sorry)

    DO I NEED:

-- MSN internet software? 67.6 MB (I do not use MSN)
-- PictureGear Studio 2.0? 170.00MB (Never used it for the last 5 years so do I even need it?)
    -- Earthlink Setup? 10.65MB  (I don't have Earthlink)

I only use my PC for my AOL mail, surfing the web, Ebay & taking surveys. Very simple stuff! (No music, no movies, no games)

    MY PC:
    Sony VAIO 2004
160 HD (Brand New Western Digital)
    1GB RAM
    Windows XP

    That's about al I know. ???

Anything I can do to speed this baby up? Thanks!!

PC feels like it has to catch up with itself at times when I multi-task. Odd!!

Is it just slow when on-line or is it slow all the time?

That may vary on alot of thing like how much stuff do you have in the taskbar will do it and such like that.

How long have you had your PC? And how long since you last did a clean reinstall of Windows?

In my experience, computers get slower and less responsive with time. I ran into this situation many times before. In the past, I would try to do upgrades, and various kinds of cleanup to speed it up. Unfortunately, the difference was usually marginal.

The most effective method I found was to simply reinstall Windows every once in a while. After a reinstall, the computer runs like brand new, even without any hardware upgrades. I would highly recommend doing a clean Windows installation. Just make sure to back up all your files.

The only downside is that you will need to reconfigure your settings and reinstall software. However, I found that this takes MUCH less time than trying to cleanup your PC by other methods.

I've had XP on my computer for over 5 years and it's still in tip-top shape. If you do the regular maintenance there should be no need for a re-install.

Ok, lots of things suggested and said. I am not technical at all and I am confused. ???

I was thinkin since my PC crashed and the new HD was installed along with the recovery disks, I was pretty much running a new PC. The only thing I thought of was bloatware because I read about it being on pc's when you get them.

Do I need the programs I mentioned? They are pretty large although with a new HD, I doubt removing will speed me up.

                HELP PLEASE

Yes, that is the stuff I was referring to. (Crapware) How do I know which crapware are only trial offers/software or expire in a matter of time??

Are the programs I listed worth keeping? I don't think I use them.

                    THANKS!!!

I don't think I do but my luck, I would remove them and the PC just needs them to run.

If they are no big deal, I will remove. I must always check with you guys before I assume, ya know.

I think my slowness may be AVG anti-virus I recently installed. I have another post live right now and people are heling me. Hopefully that was the cause of my slow PC.  ??? I thought the new HD was gonna make me feel like I have a new computer.
