Which is the longest word in English?
« on: April 29, 2009, 05:01:31 AM »
Simply, English is not my mother tongue, so I'm just asking which is the longest word in English.
Cheers.

or have seen that we had made a post like this a while back.
Windows 7 RC Tester.  Working on it.  Your monitor says etchasketch on the side!

If I fall who is there to pick me up now.  I stand alone but I stand as the gaurdian for whom I wish to protect.  The sound of my blade utters my name as you fall.  For I shall not move.  For those that forsake the very people are wosres

If you want a straight answer, use Google.

Any word we post here would most definitely be from Google, or another similar search engine.

We were told in grammer school, before Google even was a dream, the longest real word in English was:
            Antiestablismenttarianism
I only used Google to very my spelling.
Any other longer words break the rules. It was a real word that had a real purpose other that trying to be too long. This word was long recognized as the longest word.
Normally, English does not build long chain words as can be done in German.

And other word may be long, but not as long recognized, so not really the longest.

The rule is to count the number of letters and multiply by the square root of the number of years it has been recognized as a real long word. Go look it up. And not in Google. You must use a pre 1920 copy of the Britannica.

Yeah, we thought we were cool in fourth and fifth grade when we knew "antidisestablismentarianism."  Zyltra's link, above, has more...

Just look it up. A bit like what everybody else does when they want to know something.

and i thought Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoco niosis was still the longest real word there is. Dictionary has it.
