best browser to use with Vista HM Prem 64 bit?
« on: April 18, 2009, 07:35:40 AM »
I've been using mainly Firefox for the last year or so after reading on this site that several users prefer it over IE. It has served me very well! Is this preference still true when using Vist 64 bit OS.
I was just wandering since I just installed the 64 bit OS and see that some apps install as x86 based (C/program files X86) and still seem to work fine,  IE8 and Firefox both included. Is there a browser specifically designed for 64 bit OS's?

I just use FireFox...Vista Ultimate/Windows 7 64 bit...
I think it'll be awhile before a truly optimised 64bit browser will give any benefits.
Heck Adobe can't even get the 64bit ver. of Flash to run properly...

IE8 64 bit runs fine but I see some error message icons above my start button indicating errors on the page. Double clicking the icon reveals a message like this,

Quote
Webpage error details

User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.0; WOW64; Trident/4.0; SLCC1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; Media Center PC 5.0; .NET CLR 3.0.30618; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; Creative AutoUpdate v1.10.10)

Line: 28
Char: 2

This doesn't really cause any problem for me so far but I'd rather not see any errors if possible.

Now Firefox is another story.
Firefox just keeps freezing when I click on certain links. I haven't figured out why yet. Actually I havent had much time to spend on it yet since I've been using IE8 most of the time because it doesn't freeze, but I would really like to have Firefox back if it would just work right.  >:( Most all other programs are running fine and after finally getting all the drivers happy all the hardware is running fine so far. What can I do about Firefox?

Create a new Profile and see if the issue goes away...if so your profile is corrupt.
Honestly i've had zero FireFox issues running x64 for better than 8 months now.

New profile in what? How?
I've installed the latest version of Firefox and also Minefield and no errors so far, so I'll try using Firefox for a few days and report back here.

I have to leave for work (11pm-7am) in a few minutes but I'll get back on this tommorrow and post the results.
So far... I just went in and created a new profile in Firefox, re-started Firefox (fresh profile, no bookmarks ect.) and it would not access the first 2 websites I tried to access through Google, Yahoo mail and You Tube. I'm back on IE8 right now but we'll try again in the morning. Thanks guy's!!!

Well I figured out that Firefox does not freeze up due to the particular link contents that I click on. I browsed several different sites with FF until 7:14pm then it froze when I clicked on the first link google gave for my local weather 'ocala weather'. Then when I tried to close the window, it lightened the entire screen (shown in the print screen on top of IE8) and showed a message 'program is not responding. Then I opened IE8 and proceeded to post a reply in this thread at which time I got a DEP error and IE8 closed. Attached are print screens showing the lightened FF screen cascaded over IE8, and also the DEP screen.
After the DEP screen I restarted my PC and opened FF and also opened the link for 'ocala weather' with no problem.
I hope this reply post. I'm using FF now.

Personally i would find another weather info server as this does not appear to be a FFox issue...
Weather UnderGround is a good one...
Good Luck.

And a few days ago Firefox did the same thing when I clicked on the link in my yahoo mail to read a  reply in a thread I am subscribed to on this site, Computer Hope.
I'll keep using Firefox and post any additional problems I find.

I previously had 2 extensions enabled in Firefox add ons. (1) Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant 1.0 and (2) Trend Micro Toolbar. I disabled both of these and have had no problem with Firefox freezing up in a couple of days. I'll try enabling each individually to see which was the culprit and report back. Yippie!!! I have my Firefox back.  ;)

    Internet Explorer Freeze Soo Much,
EveryTime i Use It It Does That Too,
    And Safari
    I LOVED Safari
    Till They Made New Updates,
And Then It Was Like Internet Explorer
It Freezes Just Like Internet Explorer,

    I SUGGEST Firefox

well, everyone's different. If Internet explorer freezes for you, maybe it works for me. So one person's misery can be nonexistent for another person.

You suggest firefox, but ultimately it's the user that decides what he's go9ng to use.
