    Learning what it means
    « on: May 01, 2009, 12:20:37 PM »
     ;) Hi
I'm trying to understand all this language of computers.  I would like to know how seriouly can a file damage your computer?  I had a computer with so much valuable personal information and one day it informed me that the svchost.exe was missing. :'(
Missing was all my Darlin Daughters pics.  :'(  Is there any way that I can get the computer running again with my lost files?

Sorry, I dont get what you mean.
Is it that you want to learn some programming language? If so, start off with Visual Basic. Lot of free tutorials on the internet.

"how seriouly can a file damage your computer."
Depends on what the file is.

How did you know svchost.exe was missing?

    "computer running again"
We need more information, what operating system do you use?

You may want to run CHKDSK:
      http://www.google.com.hk/search?hl=en&q=chkdsk+with+windows+cd&btnG=Google+Search&meta=&aq=f&oq=

      First answer Ashutosh's question though.

Note to Moderators: Could this post not move into Microsoft Windows board rather than remain in the programming board?

Well at first I did what Dudeoxide said. It reported that it had two unrecoverable files.
Later on the computer did not reconize the HD.  Maybe I did not have it as a SLAVE DRIVE.  I'm really at fault, for posting this in the wrong forum.  Just let me know if it's transfer into the suggested forum.   I'm going to try the HD on another computers when I get the cable and try to slave it, thru USB.  I really thank you'lls for the help.  I really like computers. :D

What are you going to do once you hook it up to the other computer?

Just fyi, when you connect it via USB, it acts like a removable storage unit i.e. a USB Flash Drive.

::) Maybe we should start all over again.  I'm lost now. I read in another forum that you can slave it thru a USB ( of course with the correct cable) Now, I read that it's not going to work. I might have to read more about jumping the setting.  Any place where I can find a step by step " how to ? :-\

Your pictures are on the HDD.

            System files are corrupt.

            1) sfc /scannow  ( System file checker will scan and replace bad system files.) Insert the OS installation disk when asked for.  start, run [ sfc /scannow ]

            or

            2) The OS installation disk has a repair option.

            or

            3) A deep shutdown and reboot will sometimes correct the problem. Shut down, unplug from the wall, wait 30 seconds and reboot

p.s. If you do not have the OS installation disk, use your friends OS Disk. It will work for the sfc /scannow  procedure.   Good Luck

Do a windows search for one or all of your pictures.

search [ *.jpg ]   or search for the name of the picture.  search [ MyWife.* ]

            or  at the command prompt:
            start, run [ cmd ]

            C:\>cd \

            C:\>dir /s *.jpg
