    Is this the scanner again?

Have you tried "stop removable device"?

There are software apps like USB Safely Remove which extend the functionality.

I thought he was saying to disable his USB port so that it can't read USB's anymore.

          What does that mean?

He wants to shut off his USB port-powered scanner.

Why not shut off the scanner? Save some power.

Or better yet, unplug the scanner to free up a USB Port.

This started in another thread. The scanner has no on/off button. It is powered from the port, and consumes 1.5W standby,  2.5W operating. I asked why he does not just unplug it, he says he wants to leave it connected but be able to stop the power drain. Personally I'd unplug it.

If the scanner is plugged in, it will always consume power, whether or not it is hooked up to the computer.

this scanner is usb lead only, does not plug in, i am trying to be clever and leaving the scanner plugged into the computer without unplugging every time, just wandering if there is a easy way of switching off a usb port  and the switch back on.

            Apparently not.

And one more thing, are you sure the scanner is not plugged into the mains? I find that slightly hard to believe, though there are portable scanners out there....

my canon lidi 35 is powered by the usb lead only, hence no mains plug required

              Not bad.

If you've got a laptop, those things are meant to be unplugged, and should be unplugged.
Otherwise, with a Desktop computer, just leave it in.

Carbon, we covered all this in the other thread. The OP has a Canon LiDE 35 (correct spelling) scanner which is powered from the USB port. The OP wanted to know how to turn it off when he wasn't using it. I suggested either unplugging it or getting a switched hub. Evidently he didn't like the answers so he started another thread.

The scanner in question is stated to consume 1.5 Watts on standby, and 2.5 Watts when operating. At 5 volts, these represent currents of 300 mA and 500 mA respectively. As the USB specification allows a maximum current draw of 500 mA per segment, that should not be a problem, as long as no other device is downstream when maximum current is being drawn.

Ah, now looking at the other topic, I understand.
