Wanna help with this "Start-up Item"!
    « on: May 04, 2009, 08:45:17 AM »
    Hi Geeks! ;D

"Start-up Items" have started reflecting a "New" entry of "Groove Monitor" after I downloaded & installed Office Update of SP2 ! ???

What exactly is this & is it SAFE to disable or perhaps "Remove" the same? :-\

Just CHECK-OUT the attached File for a detailed description!

      Hey..Hey..don RUSH! >:(

I meant that is it safe to DISABLE or perhaps REMOVE the same. Unnecessary "Start-up Items" keeps clogging down your machine! 8)

What implication could result in on DISABLING the "Groove Monitor" from Start-up Item? :-*

Groove Monitor is part of Microsoft Office Groove 2007, which is installed as part of Office 2007.

It allows teams of developers to create workspaces where information and files can be shared and used as a team.

      For more information see, http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/groove/HA101650611033.aspx

To uninstall it, go to add/remove programs, select MS Office 2007 - change - check the add/remove option - go down to the MSOfficeGroove box and select not available from the drop down list, then select continue.

MSCONFIG isn't meant to be a startup manager. It's a troubleshooting tool...

      StartupLite
      • Download StartupLite by MalwareBytes to your Desktop.
      • Doubleclick StartupLite.exe to launch the program.
      • Ensure the Disable box is checked.
      • Click Continue.
      • A pop up message will tell you the unecessary startup items in your list have been disabled and ask you to restart your computer.
      • Re-start your computer.
      .
      ----------

      For additional removals.

Be sure you are 100% sure what you are disabling. If you don't know, don't do it!

      Download StartUp 1.3

      * Open StartUp 1.3 and you will see a list of your startups.
      * Right click any startup you do not want and choose Remove
      * Once complete choose Apply then Exit

Disabling or Removal of an unnecessary "Start-up Item" can easily be accomplished using CCleaner. My original post contains the Screenshot from CCleaner only! 8)

It is quite a Handy tool, very popular one! Moreover, latest version incorporates "System Restore" feature as well to undo any untoward step! ::)

        GO for CCleaner!

If I'm not mistaken  CCleaner uses the same method as Msconfig. It's not a real startup manager.

I've always used SysInternals AutoRuns, since it has more then just the RUN registry entries, and includes stuff like winlogon notify hooks and so forth.

It's funny, how people just ignore the dialog that appears after rebooting with msconfig enabled, which clearly states that it is more a diagnostic tool then anything.

I've never really liked the tools that include a method to "disable" and "enable" them, by moving the particular keys into and out of a subkey of the run key.

Why? Well- you never really know what MS might do in the future! maybe they will change it so that values in subkeys are run in the same process address space- meaning these "disabled" items will all run anyway.

        I've always opted for deletion.

          Hey BC_Programmer! :)

Is there a way that you can help me out with Autoruns? I mean, please tell me a way to use the same so that I can put forth my "Start Item" log over here, for you to scrutinize & guide me on which all things can be safely disabled or perhaps REMOVED(as you suggest) forever! ::)

Autoruns interface is a bit intimidating & I'll surely need an assistance for the same! :o

once Autoruns finishes "scanning" you can export what it found to a text file.

You should be able to attach it to a post.

Also....Please tell me what's the difference b/w autoruns.exe & autorunsc.exe? Iam able to view both on unzipping the Autoruns.zip

Tried COPY-PASTE of Log File, failed, exceeded 50K characters!

well, it looks like your running two AntiVirus programs.

That's all that really jumps out at me; but I really just glanced over it this time; I'll take a second look in the morning  :)

Well, the actual Antivirus app. is "Panda Cloud Antivirus" , AVG is the one that offers "Link Scanner Lite" as a standalone application!

So hopefully, these don't conflict with each other! ::)

Only you can determine what is necessary. Many programs add start-up agents to your system for no reason in particular. I always disable this feature, unless I explicitly need it.
