Strange error
« on: May 04, 2009, 04:29:56 AM »
I have a GNX Lcd Keyring, which is a plug and play device that works on my Mums laptop (which is newer than mine) and my old computer. However, on my actual laptop I do everything on it just refuses to work, when I plug it in Windows just stops (e.g. everything windows related, the start bar, my computer, explorer etc, whereas internet explorer and other running programs are not effected) until I remove it again. Any ideas? Someone I know said something about a hardware interrupt that maybe wasn't getting through and so the system would just halt because the memory bus was being used? This doesn't mean much to me...

Oops.

Specs:
Mums laptop (which it works on): Windows XP SP2 (dell)
My old computer (which it works on): Windows XP Professional SP1 (acer)
My laptop (which it doesn't work on): Windows SP SP3 (but also didn't work when it was SP2)

Something that could be relevant, only my laptop out of the three computers it on has a dual-core processor? Could that effect it?

That keyring looks pretty sweet. Never heard of such a device....

Anyways, did the thing come with a CD at all?

If you check Device Manager, are there any Yellow Question or Exclamation marks at all?

On another note, you should really get that XP Professional updated to AT LEAST Service Pack 2, even though you may not experience any problems.

If it worked on the problem machine, with a powered hub interposed, I would suspect borderline motherboard USB hardware/excessive power drain. It does draw recharge current from the USB port. I have an MP3 player that affects my Shuttle that way. I note that make/model not stated. Some laptops (and desktops!) are notorious for USB power issues.

Probably not related, but there is a well known USB 2.0 / power management issue on Xp mentioned here, and a hotfix which Microsoft acknowledge "may not cure" the problem.

The old computer has no ethernet card and cannot access the internet :P

TO be more specific this is the exact usb photo keyring i have from the exact shop i got it from:

http://www.bondandbond.co.nz/computers-accessories/computers-accessories/digital-photo-frames/gnx-lk-6010-digital-photo-key-ring-with-1-5-lcd-screen/prod98070.html

The usb device is supposed to be plug and play. There is no yellow explamation marks or anything in device manager, but of course, when you plug it in it stops same with everything else windows-y.

My laptop is a compaq presario v6000, and as so far as I know has never had any usb power issues, although a while back the motherboard did die and was replaced under warranty.

Also, Dias de verano, is there supposed to be a link in your post?  ???

Probably not related.

I saw a post on a forum where somebody in Holland said that if a USB mouse was plugged in to the right hand side of his V6000 it would not start up.

I don't think this would be the problem or else my external usb powered HDD wouldn't work, or my ZEN stone wouldn't work etc.

I think its more along the lines of a software / hardware fault in my laptop.

Device manager on my laptop (which it doesn't work on) reports that the keyring is at location 0 on my computer, whereas device manager on the other two say its under "usb storage."

Is this significant?

Try it with as few USB devices connected as you can...still the same ? ?
