Looking for AVI codec for vista WMP (Windows Media Player)

Hi

I really don't get it, I though avi was a codec designed by Microsoft, or am I wrong?
But then why does it only plays the sound in my WMP?
I'm searching for some way to play it on WMP, yes I do have VLC and yes it does play correctly there, but it doesn't want to play on wmp.
I tried Divx code pack and K lite but both come with a tray prog. and I don't really like it (and the quality of the Divx code pack is poor.)
Anyone who has any idea how I can make it work?

There is a reason, many people don't use WMP, and you just mentioned one.
