    Adding memory
    « on: May 06, 2009, 06:26:31 PM »
Belarc scan says I have have two memory slots with 256MB in one and the other one empty. It also says my machine can take up to 512MB RAM.

When I open my PC case I find only 1 memory slot!

    What am I missing?

I want to add memory, but how?

Usually, the second slot should be right next to the first one. It could be a mistake. For a second opinion, try crucial.com 's scanner and see what that says.

are you sure your pc has only one memory slot? Most modern computers have at least two .....

You can also try with downloading CPU-Z from following link http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php  and it'll tell you how many slots and memory type you got when you go to the memory tab  and other pc essentials and it's really good accurate small tool.

I'm positive there is only one memory slot!

I've run the crucial scan, cpu-z and a scan from allmemory.....they all say two slots.

This is a Samsung PC purchased in S. Korea in 2002. Unfortunately, I don't have a manual for it and can't find anything on the internet.

I've taken it apart as far as I'm comfortable with and can't find a second slot!

Surely there wouldn't be a memory slot on the back side of the motherboard?!?

Doesn't look like there would be enough room for them to do that even if they tried.

I would think about upgrading and not putting money into this machine.

            funny. I see two slots.

I think I do- is the second slot not covered up by the first memory slot contents?

I can only see one release pin for the ram?
Where do you see the second slot?

Any way this looks like DDR one ram, and as said earlier I would upgrade to a new computer... Skip this one...

              Thanks for the comments.

I've had the memory module out to verify that there isn't another slot behind the one visible.

As for the comments to consider an upgrade.....well, I thought for $30 bucks tops, adding memory was the way to go...still do!

I talked with a tech rep from Crucial this morning and although helpful he wasn't able to lead me to a solution.

He did say that he has seen where a second memory slot was placed on the back side of the motherboard!?  Looking at my machine I can't see how it would fit!!?

I'm not sure I want to disassemble my machine to that level to find out if this is the case.

Anyone else have knowledge of memory slot on the back side of a motherboard?

or just go with one stick of 512 mb memory. Dual Channel mode is nice, but most likely you won't notice much performance increase between 512 memory single channel or 512 memory dual channel via 2x 256mb memory sticks unless you're doing heavy duty memory gobbling things on your pc.

But if I were you, if I could afford a new PC, I'd go get it rather than trying to upgrade a 7 year old PC.

Before you do upgrade to 512 in one slot, make sure your computer can handle that much in one slot and none in the other! It may be a custom built pc? If so, and it says that each slot only can handle 256 Max, not much you can do but to perhaps stick with what you got or buy a new computer. :-\
