You're not paying us for a support contract. We volunteer our help for free, so its counterproductive to get impatient.
Depends on the version of linux how you install apps. Most install rpm's with
rpm -i , but on CentOs/Redhat you can also use
yum, on SuSE
yast2, and on Solaris
pkgadd. There's another command for debian too.
Rather than re-compiling the kernel I usually use
yast2 to upgrade it with a pre-compiled rpm version, but years ago I used to have to edit
Makefiles on SunOS to add kernel support for extra hardware, and then use
cc to compile it, then finally copy a new
/vmunix into place.
