    Help with Vista
    « on: May 09, 2009, 06:31:37 PM »
I want play an older pc game. I know it runs on Win 95. Now that I want to play it again it's not compatible with 64-bit vista. I tried fiddling with the compatibility, running as administrator, using a virtual comp (which I can't use because I don't have anything but a windows vista home version disk, so I can't even put an OS on the virtual comp).

Do I have any other options left?

    Thank you for your help.

I think, the problem is, you have to cross two barriers here.
Running 95 program in compatibility mode on Vista.
Second one 32-bit program on 64-bit system. In theory, it should work, but in real life, it's not always the case.

Not that I know of if you don't have the disk of an older Os.
Windows 7 (released as early as a few months) will have a built-in "XP mode" with the Home Premium and better releases. So if this game works on XP you'll be able to get it to work on Win7.

Did you try M$ VirtualPC? It's free.
It's not officially supported by M$ on Vista Home, and Vista Home Premium, but I tried it on Home Premium, and it worked. It had some minor issues, but nothing preventing it from running.

That wouldn't have helped him because he has no OS disc to use to install a OS on the virtual PC anyway. And I did actually get VPC working on Vista basic.

Listen to "patio", you may have set the compatibility mode wrong or something.

I right click setup.exe, the file that installs the game. It really says :Setup bootstrap for Visual Basic Setup Toolkit. Go to properties, then I click on the Compatibility tab, then I select Windows 95 under the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" check box, and the box is checked. I also have "Run as Admin" checked. I don't have anything else in the compatibility tab checked.

      The installer won't do it...
You need to find the .exe for the game itself.

I tried fiddling with it to find the actual .exe, I don't know anything beyond right-clicking and properties.

Right click on the game exe (normally in the start menu) & not the installer and click the Compatibility tab at the top. Check the "Run this program in compatibilty mode for" box and then click "Windows 95" from the drop down menu. Try the game. If it still doesn't work try it for a different version of Windows. You can also try running in "256 colors" & "640 x 480 screen resolution" because some older games need these.

I can't find the .exe for the game itself. And don't I need to install it before I'm able to play it? Is the installer supposed to release the .exe after I install it?

Normally yes, but some simple games may not need installation.
What do you have for that game? CD? floppy? installation file?

Installation file. I'll just go ahead and name all the files in the installation file. The only one that says .exe in it's properties tab is the file I mentioned above, "setup".

              compress.dc_
              mdata11.md_
              mordor.wip
              setup
              setup.lst
              setup1.ex_
              setupkit.dl_
              unwip.ex_
              vbctl3d.vb_
              vbrun300.dl_
              ver.dl_
              waves.wip

Right click on setup.exe, then Properties, then Compatibility tab.
Change compatibility mode to Windows 95. OK your way out.
Double click on setup.exe to run it.
After the game is installed, you should see the game .exe file, most likely unwip.exe (what is the name of the game?)
Change game's .exe file compatibility to Windows 95, and try to run it.

setup1.ex_ doesn't have a compatibility tab neither do any of the other files I listed, only the setup bootstrap blah blah blah one does. setup1.ex_ and all the other files except setup, say they open with Windows Shell Common.

The game is Mordor 1.1 Depths of Dejenol.

I guess I'll keep the file and wish I were playing IT. Almost as good.  :'(

No worries. I downloaded the shareware version from that same site, I guess I mixed it up with Mordor 2 which is sorta full but they abandoned it and changed the series name along with pretty much everything else. The shareware version is huge. It should keep my occupied until the MordorXP which is freeware.

Darn. I wish there was a way to alter the source code of the game so that it would work on vista. Guess I'll just have to wait for Mordor XP.

                          Thanks anyways everyone.
