Keyboard Lights. A Simple Diagnostic Tool.
« on: May 13, 2009, 11:18:49 PM »
The three Keyboard Lights on the upper right of most keyboards shoe the status of the Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock. Most of use don't look at these until we notice we are typing in UPPER CASE!
Most PCs with flash all three the instant you turn poser on. And maybe again several seconds later. The BIOS will flip on the Num Lock light on a desktop.
If you think your PC is frozen, try the Caps lock or Num Lock. If the PC is still running, the light will follow your keystroke.
Check out you PC next time you power up. Watch the Keyboard Lights. Knowing what to expect can help when you have video card go bad. Without the Video, you are not sure of what went bad. But if the lights still work, the problem is not the CPU or RAM or BIOS.

Press Caps Lock to see if the computer is functioning or not? Ridiculous!

I use the Num Lock key. :P

Anyways, this is indeed a very good diagnostic tool. If the computer is frozen and the lights flash, give it a moment. The processor may just be overworked and will most likely recover. If the lights do not flash, you've got a problem.
