    Monitor stops working randomly
    « on: May 16, 2009, 06:42:17 PM »
Every once in a while my monitor stops receiving a signal from my computer and I can't think of any way to get it working again besides restarting my computer (at which point the monitor receives a signal again).  I'm pretty sure my graphics card is the problem.  Is there a way to fix this problem?  At the very least, is there a way to get the monitor working again without having to restart the computer?

    My computer is custom built:
Monitor: Gateway FPD1760 TFT LCD Color Monitor
Graphics Card: BFG Tech GTX 280
    OS: Window Vista
Motherboard: Gigabyte EP45-UD3P Ultra Durable 3 Motherboard

(I think that should be sufficient information, but if I need to provide more I can.)

Test the monitor with a different computer or test a new monitor or graphics card

Next time it does that, turn the monitor off and on.

If that don't work, hit it on the the side of its head!

Two problems with the above suggestions:

      1. I can't predict when the monitor will stop working and so I can't reliably test it with a different computer (because I won't actually know if the problem persists on that computer unless I happen to be (un)lucky enough for it to happen again).  I suppose I could try plugging in another monitor into this computer when it happens.  If I'm able to, I'll try that next time.

      2. I've tried turning the monitor off and on again.  I've tried unplugging the monitor and then plugging it back in.  Neither of these has any effect.

By the way, I didn't mention this but I *think* my keyboard still works when this happens (though I'm not confident about this) because the lights are still on.  I don't know if there's any way to test whether my keyboard or mouse are functioning, though.

Well, numberlock works when my monitor stops responding.

        Broken wire in cable.
        Worn connector(s).
        Loose connection inside Monitor.
        Failing Video card.
