    Can only connect to HTTPS
    « on: May 17, 2009, 02:00:37 PM »
    Hello Everyone,

    I have a problem which I can't solve.

In 'Normal Mode' the PC will only connect to HTTPS (SECURE) sites. HTTP sites will not load. In this mode email does work though. I normally use FIREFOX but have tried with EXPLORER and that won't work either.

In 'SECURE MODE' I can access all sites both HTTP and HTTP and email.

I assume there is a programme blocking internet access in 'Normal Mode.' I have checked with my Internet provider and they say there is no problem with the connection.

I have ran various full scans with KASPERSKY, anti Malware and anti Spyware programmes but haven't found the problem.

I have gone to MSCONFIG and looked at the programmes in start-up but can't find anything unusual.

This started after the new version of WINDOWS LIVE was installed but I can't be sure this was the cause. I have uninstalled WINDOWS LIVE and done a system restore but it hasn't solved the problem.

Programmes like Spotify connect in 'NORMAL MODE' so the problem is confined to HTTP sites.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

    This Might help:

( All  the following information from the above site. )

"The person who messed with it changed the Boot.ini to "/safeboot".

You need to disable this within the "msconfig" utility. Hit the "start" button, or in Vista it would be the "windows" button.

From there, type "msconfig" in the field that you can type in.

Once msconfig comes up, click on the "boot.ini" tab. On that tab, you should see the option "/safeboot" checkmarked. Uncheck it, and hit "ok". It will ask you if you want to restart. Hit "yes".

Once the computer has restarted, it will be in normal mode. Generally there is a dialog box that comes up saying "you have used the system configuration utility to make changes to your system. Check this box to not show this message or run system configuration on startup" or something to that effect. Check the box and hit ok.

Then you are good to go."

Thanks Billrich but that didn't help. The safeboot wasn't checkmarked so I didn't have to uncheck it.

      Any other ideas?

      1)  Try a differnet Browser
      2) Try System Restore again
      3) Disable all security except your anti-virus ( if this t works add the security programs  back one at time until you find the culprit )
      4) Uninstall IE8 and then reinstall. Click Tools Tab while at a non working site.  Click the Compatibility View option

Thanks again. BTW: I have IE 6 AND FIREFOX 3.0.10 installed. Should I upgrade IE?

        JAH,

I use XP pro and IE8.  I believe you use Vista?

The working version of IE8 has been released. When IE8 does not work at a  site click the Tools Tab and select Compatibility View option.

There are some Vista users here who might have further advice.

        Good Luck

I use XP Pro. I'm installing IE 7 now.

          Thanks.

I tried all this that. Nothing changed. Very strange problem. Email and HTTPS connection works in normal mode but not HTTP. What can it be?

Try this browser security check and see if it reacts....

I followed the instructions in COMPUTER HOPE VIRUS AND SPYWARE SECTION GUIDELINES and have posted the 3 logs.

When I was following Step 1: ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMMES - I decided to remove the WINDOWS PARENTAL CONTROL tool and suddenly the pages started loading again.

However KASPERSKY is reporting this: 19/05/2009 22:12:03   UDP desde 218.4.149.124 al puerto local 1434   Ausente   Detectados: Intrusion.Win.MSSQL.worm.Helkern

I have posted the logs in the VIRUS AND SPYWARE SECTION.

I hope I have given enough info.

                Cheers

I thought this was a winsock issue for the longest time.  At first using netsh to recreate the catalog worked -- but only for a couple minutes and it would go back to being crappy again.

Then I noticed a post about incomplete ZoneAlarm uninstalls sometimes leaving vestiges of ZoneAlarm around that cause the behaviour I was seeing.

I downloaded this cleaner from zonealarm:

                http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/support/cpes_clean.exe

And so far, things seem to be working.

                Hope this helps someone.
