    hard drive partition
    « on: May 18, 2009, 07:06:04 PM »
My two partition hard drive on my VAIO has one partition starting to fill up.  When I download items, sometimes I am prompted to choose a hard drive (I choose the less full one) but often I get no choice and it automatically downloads to the almost full partition.  Where on my VAIO can I choose the less filled hard drive as the default place for new files, downloads, etc.

Depends on the Browser you are using...
    In Firefox it's Tools /Options/Main/Downloads...

"Main" tab is for firefox only. Now to change directory for internet explorer ...

      Quote
         1. In the left hand pane navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
         2. Right click on the white region of Regedit's right hand pane, click New, and then click String Value
         3. Enter Download Directory for the name of the new DWORD Value and press Enter. The new value should now appear in Regedit's right-hand column.
         4. Right click the new value and choose Modify.
         5. Click Modify and set the Value Data field to be the path to the directory you want IE to send downloads, then click OK.

@Geek, the original poster is USING INTERNET EXPLORER so STOP the Firefox!

Disregard Geek. Since your using INTERNET EXPLORER, Geek's post doesn't apply for you.

See image below, see on the left where you see My Computer and all the stuff below, that's the left hand panel I am talking about. Your computer should have something similar if not entirely same. See the HKey_Current_User folder there? double click it and go onto the Software subfolder then go onto the microsoft internet explorer part.

First off, thanks for sticking with this and trying to help me.  I really appreciate it.  Getting me away from the Firefox prompts cleared up a lot of confusion.  But I'm still not finding the panels.  Let me get very basic and see if this helps.

I'm on a Sony VAIO running Windows XP.  I cannot find the Registry Editor, even when I use the search function with Registry Editor or HKEY in the search line.  The "Tools" menu also offers no help.   The only place I find  "My Computer" is as a major heading when I click on the "Start" prompt in the lower left hand corner of my monitor, with a Windows logo next to it.  When I click on My Computer there I get folders and some menus, none of which have HKEY or My Computer listed with the imagery you have provided above.  Any other ideas?   Thanks.

Yes, exactly. That is what you do to open up the registry editor. You can't simply "search" for it like you could for any word document or video file existing on your pc's hard drive.

Found this. And then found the Internet Explorer part, with a downloads folder that, when opened says "AB" in blue and (value not set).

Can you post a screenshot of what you are seeing? I am not at your computer .... and just so I can see where you are looking into.
