Recovering Data from corrupted HD

Hi Folks
I have a laptop which got this errors:

Windows could not start because the following files is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\COFIG\SYSTEM

I havent got a recovery dics but i have got an windows XP disc
I dont want to format the computer because i have some important files
I do have another additional laptop thou

How do i recover data from that computer?

It was really long

What i did is downloaded ERD and burn it to a cd then use that to restore windows to the previous date
