first freezing, now no video
« on: May 18, 2005, 07:53:00 AM »
ok, first the comp was freezing (not shutting off, just freezing up) and now no video. it made a weird noise, like alot of static coming thru the speakers, the last time it froze. I checked the video card, its good. I checked the monitor, its good. all the fans are running on the mobo and the power supply. the ram was working fine. there are no software conflicts, I just slicked it off and put 98 back on it. there are no hardware conflicts. all the drivers are right. there are no beeps during bootup. the keyboard has no lights when I try num lock. wondering if I need a new mobo?

Before we talk hardware... Do you have virus protection? Have you made any changes to your system lately?

yes, I have Norton AV. but I havent been online yet since I slicked it off. the only thing I have done is slick it off and put 98 back on. then I put Norton AV, winzip, and the drivers it needed back on it, so its clean.

what steps did you take to ensure that your video card and monitor are working correctly.  Also, you mentioned that you started hearing static and other noises coming through your speakers.  Is this an integrated sound card or is it removable?  Since your sound card is the one that is at least giving you some physical signs that something ain't right, I would first remove the card from the machine or disable it if it's integrated.  I've seen cards do some wierd things so you never know.

After that, I would see how it runs.  I would try out another monitor on the machine if you have one.  And if you can, I would also try a different video card.  But make sure you do all of this one at a time so you can eliminate what's working and what's not.  Let me know how everything comes along.

I did what you said, actually before I got ur reply. I guess the sound card was, in fact, conflicting somehow. I replaced the video card, the monitor, and the sound card with some of mine and turned it back on and guess what? I got video! Then I put them all back as original one at a time and found the sound card was at fault. hmmmmm. wow. thanks for the help.   :D
