HTTPS - Can't access
« on: May 18, 2005, 05:15:42 PM »
Hi all. I'm having a problem accessing any https:// sites. I've spent about an hour on the phone with my ISP and had done everything they suggested. Took off NAV, Zone Alarm, Spybot, set all internet options to default settings, went to msconfig and went through my start up options. Unchecked anything questionable or that may have inhibited access. Went through config.sys and autoexec.bat also.
Checked the Computer Hope files for information but the only reference to https I found didn't help.
Still no access to https sites.
So the question is, now what?
Appreciate any help you can give.
Thanks, jim

Jim:

I like your caption! (i still haven't found all my marbles, either!).

I have to be honest--i've never encountered your problem.  However, maybe we will figure it out.

Please provide some more info.  What operating system are you using? (Windows 98 SE? Windows XP Home?) What Web browser are you using?  (Internet Explorer 5? IE 6? Netscape Navigator?)

Also, please type the complete address of one secure Web site you are unable to access.

Regards,
Doc

jim_me2   if you go into Internet explorer and click tool , advanced tab ...scrolll down and see if SSL 2 , SSL 3 and TLS 1.0 are ticked .

Do you have any sort of a firewall enabled ?

Have you ever been able to get to a HTTPS site ?

If you don't know the answer, it isn't a dumb question.

In reverse order of your questions:
    dl65
1- Have installed zone alarm but for this problem it is disabled, as is Norton and spybot.
    2- SSL 2.0 & 3.0 ARE ticked, TSL 1.0 is NOT ticked.
    DOC

3- https://reg1.telus.net/selfcare/SelfCareApp  This is the sign in page for my IP.
4- Browser is IE 6 with all upgrades
5- OS is Win 98 (not SE) 14 Gb drive is 46% empty

I took a look through the registry after initial post but saw nothing that to my eye looked strange. Of course I only have one and it's busy watching my back and the keyboard.
Thanks all. If my tongue doesn't get worn out, we'll lick this thing.

If you are using a proxy, try disabling or bypassing the proxy for https traffic. Some proxies don't handle it very well if at all. If you have any port blocking software or router, make sure port 443 is not blocked.

Sorry 2k dummy, but no proxy. As I said, I turned off Zone Alarm, Norton Anti Virus, etc., but still no access to HTTPS sites. Not even Norton's secure site!  ??? :-X
I don't know how to find out if port 443 - or any port - is blocked or how to reset it.
    Help, please?
    Thanks,
    jim

Okay.  Don't know what I really did but it's fixed! ::)
Played around with Norton, tinkered with Zone Alarm, bumblefarted with Spybot, then, to the amazement of all concerned,   :o  There it was!
I'm not going to analyze it, just enjoy, taking applause for a job half well done.   8)  As to what I did, just tinkered mindlessly.
Maybe sometime when my mind and hands are synchronized I'll figure it out, till then,  Joy, Joy, Joy!
