Up until a few days ago all was fine- but now when I plug into the laptop using the USB2 connection it is not being picked up
Have tested the USB ports with flash keys and they find those drives OK....could it be the cable or is the drive goosed?

Right click My Computer and select Manage...then Disk Management.
How is the external being reported there ? ?
Right click the drive and select Properties...

    Also...
Did you try the drive on another computer?

I suspect it was unplugged prematurely...
    But we'll see...

hi , thanks for your reply
it is not showing there at all, all that is there is
      C- main drive
      E- dvd drive

I am very much a novice here- can you take the time to explain how I can resolve?
      Thanks in anticipation

Did you try the drive on another computer?
It may be simply dead. Is it factory made external drive, or you used hard drive enclosure on regular hard drive?

I have not had the opportunity to test on another computer-i will try-
However,on a post someone mentioned it being disconnected too soon
        What does this do?

It could have been physically damaged.
