Problem with Microsoft Vista Home Premium desktop and Windows Explorer

Hello, I've recently moved and have suddenly found that when I boot up, instead of the standard Windows desktop appearing, I get an Explorer.exe shell display, displaying my documents instead. Usually, this happens when you open up a new process using task manager and run process 'explorer.exe'. However, as there is only one instance of it running, the desktop should be appearing and not a shell as pictures below.



In order to view the desktop, I have to close that window and then use the task manager to manually start another instance of explorer.exe.

Could someone please suggest how I would go about fixing this without reinstalling Windows?

That isn't quite what I meant. When you start your computer and you have any operating system installed, the first thing you should see when it has completed loading is the desktop. However, I have suddenly started having this problem whereby an explorer.exe window displays instead of the desktop. The desktop simply does not display, I get a white screen and that is it, even when I close that window. Then when I open up task manager and manually run explorer.exe again I get the desktop.

Appreciate your consideration and sit here in aniticipation of your new understanding and ideas regarding the matter.

I am very familiar with hijackthis and already had it installed ;-).
