What if you try to unplug first the mouse, boot into safe mode. If you manage to boot into desktop, plug in the usb mouse.

In other computers, there is a setting in Bios with regards to using a usb mouse. That should be enabled.
On others, windows must first installed drivers for it before you could use it without a hitch. Try to restart your computers and see if windows have it installed..

Go to Device Manager, and uninstall all USB hubs, and roots.
                  Restart. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

Sir, what if you try first what Broni's suggestion? If still you'll be having a problem in your mouse, load your CMOS default values..

Most important thing to remember with online tech support is to follow directions otherwise you're wasting our time and your own.

Follow Bronis' direction and then reasses your options....you may or may not need a motherboard....seeing that you get a splash screen I would surmise your MB is not the problem.

I'm glad to hear you got it running, it's too bad that it cost money, but just think of the upgrades you have now though  :)
