Web pages with advertisements stall both IE and Firefox?
    « on: June 16, 2009, 09:37:00 PM »
I use firefox 99% of the time, but do occasionally have to use IE(helio.com doesn't fully load in FF) My FF homepage is msn.com and today FF started stalling while loading the last advertisement(b.rad...something)  I tried to use IE, which also had msn.com as its homepage.  IE had the same problem and also hung on the last few percent.  I changed the IE homepage to google.com which has no advertisements on the initial page and everything loaded fine.  I then tried to go to facebook.com because I thought that it was littered with ads.  Facebook was surprisingly fully functional.  Then went to espn.com and everything froze once again.  Anyone know what could be wrong.  I believe that Flash ads are the problem, but I am not sure and I wouldn't know how to fix it if I was.  Any help would be tremendously appreciated.  Thanks

I've read on another forum about similar issues with MSN webpage. It looks like not your computer problem.

I wish I could blame the site, but I have 3 computers in the house on one network and the desktop is the only one having this issue.  Also, the problem occurs at other sites I just haven't been able to test a lot of them because everytime I get hung up it takes a long time to get IE shut down.  So far I am havig the problem at msn.com(hangs on a.rad.msn.com/ADSAdClient31), espn.com(hangs at espn.go.com) nbc.com(hangs at view.atdmt.com/MRT/iview...click=ad.dou...) and amazon.com(hangs at ad.doubleclick.net...)           I am not having the problem at google.com(including the search result page), facebook.com, and Here(computerhope.com).  Is there anything that you can see that each of these hanging points have in common?  Are they a specific kind of code?  I'll keep researching and get a longer list.

In addition: Now when I try to start FireFox I get the alert that says firefox is running, but is not responding.  To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system. even though FireFox is not running anywhere and has not been started since my last restart.  All of these issues started at the same time.  Also, the last time that FireFox was fully functional I was listening to a podcast from a local sports website and as I closed it the page froze.  Didn't think much about it then, but now I wish I would have.

Open Task Manager, and kill "firefox.exe" process.

Do you think that Bing is responsible for the problems that I am having at other sites?  And why is it just the one computer?  My laptop, which I am on now runs essentially the same things and is not having any issues.  Thanks for trying to help me through this....  Also, firefox is not showing in my processes at all and I still get that alert when I try to start it.

Make sure, you look at "Processes" tab, not "Applications" tab.

I checked all sites, you mentioned, and I'm getting high CPU usage only at msn.com.
You sure, your computer is clean?

Yes, I am checking the processes tab and no I am not sure that my computer is clean.  In fact, it probably isn't but I was hoping that was not the issue.  I have ran malwarebytes several times, but this cpu used to be mine and then I let my little brother use it for a while and it came back loaded with tons of garbage that I haven't fully gotten rid of.  Do you want me to send a HJT log?

I was following the steps and after I ran the superantispyware program and restarted windows will not load.  We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start normally...  What do I do now?

When I try to boot to recovery mode I get the blue screen that says UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME if that helps any at all.

                  UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME....not too good...
At what point of booting are you getting the above message?

                  Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD, and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.

When loading... it makes it as far as the select version (winows xp or windows recovery mode) and then I get a black screen that says that there was an error while loading windows and I get options( boot to: safe mode, safe mode with networking, last known functional settings, windows xp) each option brings me back to the same black screen.  When I attempt to boot to windows recovery mode I get the blue screen that says UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME.  I have a valid copy of windows XP which I purchased to replace Vista on another cpu but never used.  Should I just reinstall XP and start over?  Or do you think that there is some light at the end of this tunnel?
