is have recently obtained a computer from someone that forgot there HDD Password. The laptop is a acer.

Is it a laptop or desktop computer? What is the OS and what screen exactly are you talking about, that requires a password?

I assume, this is a password set in BIOS.
If so, without contacting laptop's manufacturer with a proof of the ownership, you can't do much.

In fact, if it indeed a HDD, and not a CMOS password- even the manufacturer cannot remove/reset the password. It says this right in my thinkpad manual!   ;)
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.
