    Local Area Connection MESSAGE
    « on: June 24, 2009, 06:16:09 PM »
I have a new netbook and a message keeps popping up stating 'Local Area Connection - A network cable is unplugged'.   The icon for it by my clock has a red X thru it.  When I right click on it, I have 2 choices...
    CHANGE WINDOWS FIREWALL SETTINGS
or OPEN NETWORK CONNECTIONS  (This one is in bold print)

When I click on the OPEN NETWORK CONNECTIONS, a box pops up.

A headline inside the box reads LAN or High Speed Internet

Under that, the second pc icon is the Local Area with the red X. (Marvell Yukon 88E8040 PCI-E.....)

    WHAT DOES THIS MEAN???

This is a laptop and I am not connected to any wires unless I plug in to charge the unit. I tried to read & find the answer  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910389 on my own but I do not understand what I am reading.

Help please. I am not technical so go easy on mw with terms.

Since you are not using wired Internet you might just have to disable the onboard wired network card through device manager...

    START>right-click "my computer">properties>hardware tab>device manager

Next to where it says, "network adapters" click on the "+" sign, and under that, right click on the network card/s that are NOT your wireless adapter and disable them.

There could also be something in the "start up" programs list that is causing it.

Click START, click RUN, type MSCONFIG and click OK....click on the "start up" tab and try to find anything that resembles Marvell Yukon 88E8040 PCI-E...If you find it, uncheck it, click "apply", click OK, and restart your computer and see if the problem is gone

edit: It might also be this:  Click START, control panel, be sure you are in "Classic View" and click on "network connections", when you see the Marvell Yukon network adapter, right click on it and click properties, then at the bottom of the box, uncheck where it says, "Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity"  and click OK

I'm going to go with blockHEAD on this one, that sounds like the simplest solution.

I am scared to upset the applecart, ya know. I am not technical and sometimes can't undo my errors.

It's a very simple process, and it's easy to undo.

The only reason that you are getting this error is because you are not using a cable for your connection to the router.  It doesn't mean that there is something wrong.  All you will be doing is telling the computer that you don't need to be told that it's not cable connected.

Go with the first part of blockHEAD's answer to start.  Leave the rest for later, if need be.  You'll have to forgive him -- he's just received his A+ computer certification, and he's really enthusiastic!   ;)

Ok, I did what you stated but I am stuck at the last part...

It shows 2 things under the Network Adapters:

Atheros AR500 7EG Wireless Network Adapter
          and
MARVEL YUKON 88E8840 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller

          WHICH ONE DO I DISABLE?

          Thanks!!  :-*

Disable the MARVEL YUKON 88E8840 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller, if you disable the other one you will lose your internet connection until it's restored :)
