motherboard stopped responding

ok let me get down to it.  last night my Pc shut down and after attempting to power back on i heard a pop and then smelt the smell everyone dreads.  so i pull the psu out test it all green lights.  check the mobo and see no signs of swelling or burn marks.  someone help?

psu maybe have had it>>varistor>>>do you have a surge protector on you system!!
