nvidia geforce 8400 or 9500 for dual monitor
« on: July 03, 2009, 12:02:48 PM »
I want to use 2 monitors to extend my windows workspace and I am wondering if the geforce 8400 or the geforce 9500 is better if I want to extend my workspace on the windows desktop.

Interesting question. I just made this choice myself.

The only reason I wanted the 9500 was because it has Two DVI ports, instead of One DVI and One VGA.

But, there is honestly no difference. Pick the cheapest one. Pssst! *whispers* That means the FIRST one!

      Wrong choice  ;)

That's your opinion, how about a citation, or at least an explanation of your opinion.

But I want to know WHY you made that choice.

Is it the games that you play?
Is it the way the drivers work with your system?

I really am asking, I want you to tell my why.

This is simple, friend. So listen well.

This graphics card is NOT for playing games. This graphics card does NOT even need drivers.

It is solely for powering an extra monitor that one does not use for anything but desktop space. Thus, the cheaper option is ultimately, absolutely and infinitely prevalent.

technically, he is right though- if you want to be pedantic- since the OP asked which is better to extend their desktop; since they both can it stands to reason that the cheaper alternative is preferable.

However, on the other hand, that is being just that- pedantic- nobody asks "which is better"  in reference to a duplicate feature between two cards; instead one must fill in the blanks. One can thus assume that they want to know which gives better performance when extending the windows desktop on a second monitor. This is not the same question- They will be the same with 2D graphics, however, Windows Aero (if it employed) will almost assuredly benefit from the more powerful GPU, especially when using two screens. This of course extends to any other OS when running games that support using two monitors (very few do, that I know of).

That attitude doesn't look good on you.  I'd suggest an adjustment.

An 8400 is about $30 and the 9500 is about $50.  The 9500 has 2 dvi which is better and its the best choice if you want to run aero or anything like that.  I think the 9500 would be the best for the future too.  I think the extra $20 is worth it.

He's said already in a few of his posts that he knows the most about hardware out of anybody on this forum. He also apparently has every single game console and game ever created. That was about the time I realized he was just a run of the mill BS-er.

9400GT or 9500GT would both serve you fine, if you're a non-gamer at heart. But a 9500GT (which I have currently in my machine) serves a age of empires 3 fan just fine. So neelchaun, we need to know what you primarily want to do on your pc with the multi monitors (which is what I assume you wanted when you said extend your desktop and is this a computer you use for work?)
