ActiveX has always been a security mess. Big part of the reason I originally moved away from IE.
If you for some reason need to use IE, apply the workaround Microsoft have come up with.

For Internet Explorer you can also use SpywareBlaster to block known bad ActiveX.

ActiveX is great on the client but the extension to the net was a bit ill-thought out by MS.
