Sorry, dumb question - but does this reinstall the video drive, fix it or update it? I installed something similar, downloaded from the nvidia site and my log in screen would disappear or the computer would become extremely tempermental.

My log in screen has recently reappeared by itself (I was using safe mode with connections prior) so I don't want to upset the computer further.

Well, my log in screen has disappeared again and after waiting some time and using system restore (it worked once) I'm going to give this a go. Here it goes! I'll let you know if it works.

When was the last time you blew the dust out of your computer with a can of compressed air?

      How old is the computer?

Sorry socrates, I was a bit cranky that day.  It's no real excuse.

JJ 3000 - The computer is around 2 1/2 years old so it is getting on. But it has been working completely fine until this June when I updated the graphics driver. No problems at all. I must say, blowing some dust out of the computer didn't cross my mind.  :) I'll try that.

Broni - I used the link you provided and updated/installed the nVidia product. Nothing changed. The log in screen hasn't reappeared so I can't access the main computer. I installed the update in safe mode with connections - does that make a difference? I can always do a system restore. And while the installation was happening, a box also popped up saying 'stereo server (?) did not install properly' or something to that extent.

Any other suggestions of what I might be able to do? I'll probably have to take it down the shops soon since I need to do some work but I just have this feeling it's probably something extremely simple that the technician will probably fix in 5 minutes.

Ok, my log in screen has decided to reappear again so I'm able to enter the main computer again. It still decides to restart if I leave it alone for maybe 5-10 minutes, maybe even less.

This was the error code I got:

          Problem signature:
            Problem Event Name:   BlueScreen
            OS Version:   6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.3
            Locale ID:   3081

          Additional information about the problem:
            BCCode:   116
            BCP1:   86986E68
            BCP2:   8B59C150
            BCP3:   00000000
            BCP4:   00000002
            OS Version:   6_0_6000
            Service Pack:   0_0
            Product:   768_1

Is it the same as before?

          Open Windows Explorer.
          Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump folder.
If you see any .dmp files, zip all of them, and attach zipped file to your next reply.
[Vista users] You may need to copy .dmp files, paste them into some other folder, or desktop, and zip them there.

Ok, I've tried doing it but now it seems as if I'm not allowed to. I'm the main user so I should have control over everything.

            I'm getting this:

            !   Cannot create Mini080209-01.rar
            !   Access is denied.

            Oh dear..

Same reason: nvlddmkm.sys, your nVidia driver.
Uninstall current driver, install fresh copy.
I gave you link already: http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_winvista_32bit_190.38_whql.html

Oh, I didn't uninstall it the other time. I'll give it go now. Thanks.

I would, after having uninstalled the older drivers, then run Driver Sweeper Utility to clean your computer of anything may be left behind by the uninstallation process and then start the new driver installation.
