Have you tried plugging in the s-video cable to the computer after the computer's already on?

The difficult part of going from s-video to rca is that often the computer will have trouble autodetecting what type of display it is (or won't even try).

I don't think they are going to RCA, perhaps RGB or component? I say this because S-video does not carry sound, so a S-vid to RCA would only have a yellow, not 3  :)

If your graphics card does not have the correct drivers (eg windows ones rather than the ATi or nVidia ones) It may not operate corrently, also, if the graphics card does not support TV-out it will not work.

What is the brand and model of your card?

Good point.  I completely glossed over the s-video to video connection.  It would only be one cable.  Either way, though, I find it very rare that a video card can detect a display when connected via s-video to another type of video connection.

RCA end of cable goes to TV
    Yellow - Video in
Red - Audio in (Right channel)
White - Audio in (Left channel)

Opposite end of cable goes to computer
    S-Video out
3.5mm stereo Audio connector to audio output jack

Just to follow up on my post, did you try to update your graphics card drivers?
