You should never run any software that cleans or optimizes the registry.  It could be what caused the drive to fail in the first place.

Is there another computer that you can try the optical drive on?  Or another drive you can try in the computer?

Definitely sounds like the optical drive. Time for a new one.

      1.  Current Status:
           a.  CD device marked OK in Device Manager.
                (1)  Can read store bought CDs
                (2)  Cannot read CDs written by this CD device

           b.  "Other Devices" listed in Device Manager with "Yellow" trouble icon.
                 (1)  PCI device
                 (2)  PCI simple communication controller
                 (3)  USB controller
                 (4)  Unknown device

           c.  Sound not working.

      2.  You should install the appropriate motherboard drivers.  This should include drivers for the motherboard "chipset" and for each of the other onboard components.  If brand name computer (e.g. Dell, HP, Gateway, etc) look on their website; otherwise go to website of motherboard manufacturer.  This should clear up the "Yellow" icon for the "Other Devices" and probably the "Sound".

      3.  What type of interface does the CD drive use?  PATA, SATA, USB?

      4.  Which Windows XP and Service Pack Level did you install?  Home Edition or Professional?  Original, SP1, SP2, SP3?

      sigh...

It's like talking to a wall...

I find it ironic that a program called "little registry cleaner" requires the .NET framework.

      no it doesnt
      its not a scam but
not to prove it cannot make a mistake
it is unlikly to damage to registrey but not impossable
but if it does its not on purpose

if you sued them you must have had problems...

but your missing his entire point. we don't recommend registry cleaners. They NEVER "clean" the registry, they never make the PC faster, and they are completely unnecessary. It doesn't matter wether your aunt and uncle use it, and wether it can cause problems accidentally or on purpose, it's still a registry cleaner.

as you said yourself- it can make mistakes. Why bother running it at all if said mistakes can cause either a non-booting situation, driver issues, or worse, all in the name of what- a few kilobytes of  disk space.

the point is not wether it's malicious, or a scam... the point is it's a registry cleaner and they are unnecessary and wholly useless. Especially- as in this case, when they don't take into accoutn x64 file system and registry redirection, causing it to decide that certain files don't exist, and thus declare certain keys invalid.

I dont know if this will help but i kinda had the same problem . I changed out my cdrom/dvd , and after installing new one I couldnt find drive on computer . I took to "Geek Squad" (no other choice) and first question was "do you use an I-pod" ? And ofcourse answer was yes , they used their magical device and put the drive back in . They said sometimes Apple does weird things in computers (not their lingo). If this has nothing to do with ur prob , sorry for the post .

Ahh, this would likely be related to itunes- I'm sure it installed low-level drivers for disc drives and what-not.
