CyberDefender. Is this a Scam?
« on: August 06, 2009, 06:49:36 PM »
My friends computer got a virus and she downloaded CyberDefender for $49.00 but it didn't fix her PC. So she called their tech support and they supposedly fixed her PC via remote connection for $300.00. I'm sceptical about this and need some information about this service. What to expect next ect. I told her not to do anything else until she contacts me first. What should I tell her. Did she get ripped?

CyberDefender is dangerous rogue software....have your friend contact her credit card people and demand a chargeback for her money....This is a scam ...All her problems can be fixed here for free..... I'd be really worried if these people had my ID.

I checked out their website and, according to WOT, their site has a poor reputation. I also found this and found another here review and it appears to be legit. Especially read the user's reviews near the bottom.I really can't understand why they had to charge her $300 additional for on-line help if the $ 49 version couldn't fix her problem.

How can she demand a chargeback now after her computer is supposedly fixed without any proof that this is a scam? As Superdave says in his post (next) they are a legit company even if they do have a bad reputation.

I told her yesterday on the phone to register and post on this forum. Then I later found out she had a problem with entering the text image that is at the bottom of the registration form. She kept entering the text but it kept saying her entry was wrong. I wish I would have been there to do it for her.  :(

If this is cyberdefender's official website, www.cyberdefender.com (I think it's related to that $49.00 thing you mentioned)

Better Business Bureau says Cyberdefender is BBB accredited and has a "A" rating --> See link ere ... http://www.la.bbb.org/Business-Report/Cyberdefender-13196224

So, now, Cyberdefender should be willing to help with your billing issue and explain the situation with them preferably on the phone. If this were a phishing scam you got looped into, I would think Cyberdefender would try to help you out to keep their good name,  if not, I would contact BBB.org to file a complaint and I think Cyberdefender would not want to risk losing that BBB certificate.

From their supposedly official website of www.cyberdefender.com

try that to see if they won't revert the charges first.
Why would they revert the charges? She paid them to fix her computer and so far it's running fine, (according to what she told me on the phone earlier). I'm sure there was far less wrong with it than they told her but I have no proof. We know $300 is a rip-off price to remove malware from a PC, but she agreed to it.

if she agreed to it, then she can't complain, even though it was too expensive for a fix.

I concurr, we could've fixed it for a lot less, but she did get what she paid for.

Yep. There's really nothing I can do other than make sure she doesn't go any further in the hole.

All symptoms are not gone. Even if she is offline her Yahoo mail account keeps sending me emails with no subject and only a link in the message. My Trend Micro IS Pro prevents me from opening the links. Two of them lead to (Do Not Open the Following Site unless you have real time antivirus protection!).

Anyone know why Trend Micro is blocking this site? What danger does it present?

Obviously you should always have good anti virus software installed.
It would be a lot easier to just give support to your friend than using you as a mediator.

I emailed her about an hour ago to see if she tried again to register here. I'll get her on here ASAP.

Okay, I just know that I don't make a good interpreter, so I assume nobody else does either :)

CyberDefender is not a scam. It has shown up on many blacklists in the past. A past reputation like that will follow them probably forever. I personally will never use or recommend it.
