Hard drive disappears when trying to defrag/download

I can't seem to get a break when it comes to Hard drives.

I was intending to clone my master 40gb drive to a partition on my 250gb slave drive, but before I did it I wanted to defragment the F: drive.

But every time I try to defrag it, it starts making a nasty grinding noise and then an error box comes up in the bottom right of the screen (screenshot below)

The drive disappears from the system completely until I turn the system off and then turn it on again.

I have also found I get the same error when I try to download things onto it as well.

Does anyone know if there is a way I can fix this?

I think you should concentrate on removing all data that means anything to you as quickly as you can...forget about any defrag now...your primary concern is to save your data......Back it up and CONFIRM it is backed up......Once you've done this run the manufacturers diagnostic program and confirm the drive unstable.......remember to save data first since the stress of the diagnostic could trash the drive completely.

Why are you trying to defragment your F drive, is that not your optical drive?

Please tell us what your drive structure consists of.

What is your F: drive?

You said Diskeeper...the image is Perfect Disk...

What happens if you clik on Drive Map ? ?
List all your drives in this machine...then list any partitions on each drive.

I had a similar issue, with disappearing drives...

I replaced my power supply... the problem disappeared instead.
