1. You can either "
directly" edit the Windows Registry or use a utility such as "Tweak UI" to "
indirectly" edit the registry.

Tweak UI v2.1. This utility is one of the Windows XP PowerToys. From within Tweak UI, expand the "General" category in the left hand pane. On the right hand side of the window, it's the last item listed in the "Settings" subsection. Clear the checkbox for "Show Windows version on desktop".
