you need to post details or we cant help
it could be virus, corrupted registry, computer needs a reboot, icon file corrupted or you have
the file associations set wrong

If they're blue it means they have been compressed...whether voluntarily or by accident...

what do the files have in common? are they shortcuts? it's possible the shortcut overlay was changed.

That's the font colour; I believe he means the file icons. A screenshot would be so helpful. Also you can use Explorer in Details view to tell you the file type. Have you installed some software recently?

They are appearing on Word, PDF, Excel and perhaps some other files.  I did not knowingly set any programs or other settings up to compress files.  I'd be glad to include a screen shot -- how do I do that??

sounds like you downloaded a program that reads those
files and took over the file assocation

There do not seem to be any association or any other problems that I can see. -- everything works just as it always has.  Just the blue box with the two white, right facing chevrons in the lower left corne of a lot of file icons.

To do this, follow this procedure:
1. Maximize the window you'd like to capture.
2. To copy/capture the current window, hold down ALT + Print Scrn at the same time. To capture the entire screen, just press Print Scrn.
3. Open a new document in MS Paint, MS Word, MS Photo Editor, or Adobe PhotoShop.
4. Paste the screen shot by holding down CTRL and V at the same time.
5. Print the document when you're finished pasting screen shots, or save as a file to desktop.

It was generic copy and paste, I added "or save as a file to desktop" for that reason....

when you are wirting your reply
click Additional Options->Browse
locate the file you saved and post

Got exactly the same on laptop running XP. Seems to have coincided with upgrading Norton 360 V2 to V3  a few days ago though can't see anything on Symantic's web site about it. Can't say it bothers me too much either but would be good to know what it's all about.
