This is where i'll disagree slightly...i've seen Repair Installs wipe data and partially install the OS...
More than once.

All it takes is for the user to skip/miss one step.

Yes, it happens. That's why I mentioned not to format. But again, there's certainly no harm in doing it your way and then doing the repair install.

    Well....good news!  Slaving the drive worked perfectly.  I got all of my files with no problems.  Thank you guys for all of your input. I never thought of slaving the drive, but it worked. I have my files and I am now formatting the drive.
