    Microsofts latest updates
    « on: August 26, 2009, 09:21:50 PM »
Sunday 8/23, Microsoft updates downloaded.  When my computer came back up, my restore dates were gone, the two printer drivers were gone, and the font in the location bar and the tabs plus the microsoft pop ups is wierd and almost unreadable.  Plus, I haven't won a game of solitaire sinced (that's a joke).  Has anyone experienced a similar problem with the updates?

Microsoft sucks in general, their updates have been known to break things. You really should try to roll back using a restore point before the update. Sometimes microsoft updates things that break other things (for example, if you install internet explorer 8, it breaks halo, personally id rather have halo cause IE sucks). My mom (shes pretty good with computers too, but i set and configured her netbook) has had problems with that update too. You arent alone on the problem, i can tell you that. It just so happens that your computer was configured in a way that the update just doesnt like it and it causes problems.

Sounds to me like you might possibly have other issues. What protections (firewall, anti-virus, spyware) are you using?

Agreed. Updates would not cause the problems you've described. You can ignore the previous post. There's no such thing as a system "configured in such a way that updates cause problems."

Thanks to all for the replys.  I am using Windows Live One Care as antivirus.  To solve the problems, I am formatting the hard drive and starting over - spent yesterday backing up everything so I can start new.

Windows Live One Care is not nearly as effective as a quality standalone AV utility.

And since the Mothership abandoned it in July except for paying customers it's definitely time to seek an alternative solution...

Ok What's the feeling on AVG Free?  Norton seems to slow my computer down A LOT.  Anything else in antivirus that you (all) would recommend?

updates always cause more trouble then they help
i know it sounds stupid but try rebooting
open a command prompt and type
          cd C:\windows\fonts
          dir
you should see a long list of fonts
if you only see a few somethings really wrong
as for printer drivers simply reinstall them

The majority of them are designed to fix security issues.  Are you saying don't get updates?   ::)

          i wouldnt recomend it but
i do manual updates and only do important ones
such as service packs and driver updates
and if its one that says it cannot be removed
even if its critcal one i wont install it
speaking of uninstall can you uninstall the updates from add/remove programs
          or your os's equivilent

I seriously don't know where you get your facts from. Is it personal experience or what?

I just reported what happened to my computer.  If it was the update - I would be surprised - however to fix the problems I have formatted the C: drive, re-installed as many of the programs as I could through the weekend, and will finish up tomorrow with those I have to contact the providers  to get.  The computer is now running fine - much quicker, and I will ad here something an HP tech told me Friday night.  "The reason you had such a long wait to get an HP tech on the line is that the latest VISTA update, when downloaded onto a computer with an Intel processor, left those users with a blue screen."  I'm not making this up - it's a near exact quote.  So some updates can cause problems I guess.  Anyway, I'm fine now.  Thanks to all who tried to help.  Ronindenver
