    installing OS on a dell tour

    i am tring to install a new OS xp home on a dell computer. it starts fine and when its about to install windows it stops and tells me that if you see this message again the computer will shut down to protect it. it doesn't get me to the point to delete partions and so on. gettting error before.


    what can i do next?

    Provide all details. Why are you installing the OS (was there some problem)? HOW are you trying to install it (exact steps)? Are you using an original retail XP CD? Anything else that might help.

      dell-xps400 64bit intel dual core processor ATI 256 2GB ram

      put in XP hit F12 goes to windows setup gets to setup is starting windows it stops.

      blue screen with a long code:

      problem has been detected windows has been shut down....

      on and on

      last code i got was setupdd.sys

      etc.

      it tells me to disable bios cashing... how and where...not in my bios section...
      million dollar question..

      Is it an old CD? Have you tried cleaning it?

      WHY are you installing the OS?
      Are you booting to the cd or trying to start the install from within Windows?
      Why are you pressing F12?

        Booting from CD
        F12 i thought that's what you were suppose to do...
        64bit

        installing an OS because there was some sort of virus and i was just trying to clean everything and start fresh

          i have a set of XP PRO CD's from manufactor but the system has a license from XP HOME
          Can i use it?

          Borrow an XP Home CD...
          If the machine is liscensed this is perfectly legal...
