Does this computer have FDD or CD-ROM?  When I have problems like this, I revert to DOS and use FDISK.  Build a boot disk from Win98SE to Boot DOS v7, Then FDISK and FORMAT.  Don't you guys use GHOST for image backup and restore?

Nope.

Gave up the Ghost right after Symantec gobbled it up and ruined it...

Here is something that may help.
Get another HDD from somewhere else and try the install.
Let us know if you can try that and what resulted.
