Images/faces dark when I open a video to view it.

I have Windows XP, Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop, 2½ years old, (the computer, not me).

Recently on any videos I try to watch,  the images, particularly faces are all solidly black, darkened, not viewable.
I've always used Windows Media Player which was the default when I bought the computer.

I just do  mostly basic stuff on the computer.  I am not a "techie".

I'm also new to your service & any Forum.  If you need additional info please let me know.  Any help is certainly appreciated.
