System shuts off during  AV scan
« on: June 07, 2005, 09:26:32 AM »
Hi. I'm having a problem W/ my daughters laptop. It works fine for most things, EXCEPT: it shuts off during every Virus and spyware scan. It also has the firewall turned off on every boot.
It's a 2 year old Toshiba running Win XP W/ SP2. A current Norton 2005 subscription is in effect. I have AdAware SE and Spybot S&D updated and installed. I also have Spyblaster installed. Each of these 3 products just shuts off the system during any or their scans. I've also loaded the Beta Microsoft spyware utility. This is the only product that scans all the way thru, but it doesn't find anything. I've tried CWsearch shredder also.
This is driving me nuts. Can anyone suggest what else I can do? Thanks.

How long has this been happening? Can you run the scans in safe mode? When teh computer shuts itself down, do you see a blue screen for aout 1/2 a second before the computer restarts?

Not sure how long, possibly since march of this year. System restore only goes back that far. It should go to at least 10/04 if not earlier. I tried all scans in safe mode, with same results. No blue screen at all, just immediate power off. Weird part is everything else seems to work OK.

Forgot to mention, no it doesn't restart, it only powers off.

When the system crashed like that, what is the system temperature? Do you know how to check that in the BIOS?

Umm, I don't think temp is an issue, but I'll look into it. Not 100%sure where to find it. Toshiba has a strange (to me) BIOS, where the settings appear in control panel. Going into BIOS on boot only gets me a text based screen with no selectable options.
As a side note, this unit did have  a fan replaced once. And in the original warantee period we also had the planar changed, presumably all heat related issues. Will look at it tonight and get back to you.

I do not believe that Toshiba Laptops display temperatures.

If you don't know the answer, it isn't a dumb question.

OK, I made progress, but not complete success. I tweaked the processor down a notch (power properties) and made it through a complete virus scan. Found 5 items. I deleted those and re-scanned. It found 3 more items, but then it shutoff again like usual. So it just may be heat related. I ran out of time last night so I'll try again tonight. Raptor is right, it doesn't show any temperature anywhere.

To what have you set your cooling to? Performance or silence?

    It has:
    Maximum performance
    Performance
    Can't remember the 3rd.

I used Performance. (Default was Maximum)

See if maximum performance has a positive effect on the time the Laptop can stay powered on.

Battery optimized is the 3rd (lowest) power setting. I got through all scans last night with no power offs under this lowest setting. Having it set to
Maximum performance (the highest setting) is when the problems started.
So, thanks for your help there Mr. Flame.
