Trust me. I'm very familiar with HJT. Period.

Mr. Broni :

The post was for computerhelp, the original poster.   Computerhelp is not familiar with HJT.  I have not used HJT.  When we use HJT Mr. Broni  must do all the work except gather the log.

I'm  aware that Mr. Broni is an expert with HJT.

I have never had a need for HJT.  HJT is an overkill.

Did Mr. Computerhelp furnish the  HJT log?

Mr. Broni cannot do his magic when Mr. Broni does not have the HJT log.

HJT is an effective tool to identify what a machine is doing...it's far from overkill...
Posting the debug info in an Everest report is overkill.

Respectfully,

I'm not sure the browsing history will be restored?  If System Restore does not work, you can reverse the process to where you are now.

HijackThis produces an extremely long and complicated log.  Another section of this Hope site would most likely need to interpret the hijackthis log.

Hijackthis is a sledge hammer and all you need is regular hammer.

p.s. I doubt that Hijackthis can restore the web browsing history.  More likely web browsing history can be restored with System restore.  Or a backup disk if you have one?

A: "browsing history" is by it's very definition a set of data files.

the only data files saved/restored by system restore are the registry.

And to call a hijackthis log "long and complicated" is to profess your own ignorance about it rather then a provide a subjective analysis.

The original issue is that a dialog box appears saying "not installed".

Where does one suspect this dialog comes from? Those familar know that a hijackthis log will almost certainly ascertain the source of this messagebox (likely being a Startup entry).

a System restore would have to go back to before the program was installed at all, which would likely encompass other software installations/patches that had been installed in the meantime.

overkill is doing more then is necessary- I would class removing months worth of patches/applications simply because of a single remaining file and registry entry from an unwanted application fall in that category.

Did ComputerHelp, the original poster, furnish the Hijackthis log?

What did Mr. Broni find in the log and what was Mr. Broni advise to ComputerHelp, the original poster?

Is the advise and the HJT log on another thread?

p.s.
Did BC mean "subjective analysis"  or "objective analysis"?

How is this relevant?

I meant to say Objective... actually I had objective first, then replaced it with subjective... had a little conflict with myself over which one to use.  ;)

I have not used or  seen the HJT procedure work.  I would like to see the procedure work.

ComputerHelp, the original poster, has a problem that can be solved with HJT.

May we all learn from the HJT procedure as  Mr. Broni solves ComputerHelp's problem?
