If you can, try last known good configuration (F8) at start....
otherwise we're going to need some logs,

      You'll have to go here....

      http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,46313.0.html

If you've lost your connection, download the programs to a USB stick on a good PC and transfer them to your PC.
If you have difficulty, you may have to run them in safe mode, tap F8 at start, .
If you have difficulty, you may have to rename the programs when you save them.
If you get stuck on a step, proceed to the next .

Post the logs for step 3,4 and 6.

Never argue with a stupid person, they'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

What led up to this (these things don't spontaneously happen)? Between the last time the system booted normally and the first time it didn't what changed (new hw, sw, virus, etc)? And do you have an XP CD?

there was a notice that stated that the computer had been attacked. when the computer was shut down, when re started there was nothing. except the screen saver. and no way of accessing safe mode or a restore. Should I be thinking in a re install of the OP

That's a last resort, but one we may get to later. What type of notice stating the computer was attacked? Do you remember the wording and where, when and how the message appeared (and was it a Microsost message)?

no it was not a microsoft message, we thought it was an Avast message.

If it was from your AV you would have known it. I'd suggest you boot to an AVAST boot cd and run a system scan at boot.
