not to be pedantic but in general it is the contaminants in water, that is, minerals and so forth, that cause the damage; and of course sugar doesn't help
it's worth a shot though- some people I know have had success cleaning flash drives for example that were doused with soda pop by using Distilled water- NOT bottled water - and having a glassful and immersing the entire circuit board of the drive (fairly small) and using a fresh glass and transferring it over every few hours for a day or so, and then letting it dry out for around 3-4 days.
All the files and everything were accessible. I was as amazed as anyone.
of course this would be a very tricky business given the larger size of the player.
