Suddenly slow internet connection, what else to do?
« on: June 10, 2005, 10:57:35 PM »
Please I need some help.  I can't think of what else to try.  So here is the situation.  A couple days ago my PC internet connection became really slow for no apparent reason.  But my laptop connection is fine.  Both are XP machines, fairly new, going through the same router.  Here is what I have tried:

Unplugging router and modem
Restarting, powering down computer
Putting a PCI LAN card in (was using built in motherboard connection)
Updating drivers for the PCI LAN card
Trying different LAN cord
Uninstalling antivirus and antispyware programs
Reinstalling antivirus and antispyware programs
Running full system antivirus scan
Running Ad Aware SE and removing what it found
Running broadband speed test.  On laptop it was 1.3 MBps, but only 470 KBps on the PC.

Here are the log files I made

I can't think of what else to do.   Please help!

Susan

Have you tried to repair your connection?

Follow these steps to do:

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Network connections
5. [Name of network connection]
6. Right click on [Name of network connection]
7. Click repair
-- Or recover. Translation can be incorrect.

In your second HijackthisLog (Startup log)

the C:\Windows\system32\j?vaw.exe does not seem to belong there. According to the research I have done, it seems to be either spyware or a virus.

1. Does your spywarescanner nor Virus scanner not detect 2. it? What scanners are you using?

Well, I am not sure what you mean by power outages on my ISP so I'd say I haven't checked that.  I haven't checked for bugs either, though my laptop runs just fine, only my PC is giving me grief.  I tried to repair my connection and it didn't help.  I looked up that j?vaw.exe thing and I believe I got rid of it.  It wasn't detected in my virus or ad-aware SE scan.  I use Symantec and Ad Aware SE 1.06r1.

Here is the newest log:

Thanks for the advice so far.  Got some more things to try?

    Paste your log here
    http://www.hijackthis.de/index.php?langselect=english
    and get it analysed.
Comcast looks like it may be a problem.

Ok, so I check this morning and it is still slow.  I go to work and come home, and suddenly it is working fine again.  Didn't do anything and it is just working again.  I'm glad it is working and all, but I would have liked to know what the heck was wrong in the first place.  I will remove that Comcast Support thing.  Well, thanks everyone for the advice.   :)   TTFN
