Oh Geez!!! Do I have an infection?
    « on: September 15, 2009, 10:13:44 AM »
I keep getting pop ups that look like they are legit.  It shows 396 potential threats and viruses. It runs some kind of scan and then asks of I want them removed. When I click on yes, it wants me to buy Windows Protection Suite.

A pop up of an unauthorized connection is trying to be accessed. ??

I have a small red castle icon near the icons by the clock in the right hand bottom corner. ??

The WARNING! TROJAN FOUND! pop-ups can be closed but keep popping back up. Please help!

I am not technical so please go easy with the terms and instructions.

I had a new hard drive put in about 4 months ago.  I am not sure what the guy who installed it put in it as far as any kind of virus protector.  :'(

I know you guys once asked for a screen shot of something but I totally forgot where and what to get........or if you need it.

Download and run a full scan with MalwareBytes and also run a full scan with your AV. And stop clicking on popups.

You don't have an anti virus utility installed? You need to get one and keep it resident and updated at all times. For now you can download and run AVAST (http://www.avast.com/eng/download.html) and you can get MalwareBytes here (http://www.malwarebytes.org/) and run a full scan.

Looks like I had Avast. Ummm, I downloaded the Malwarebytes and did a full scan. It found many 'problems' so I had it remove them. I am about to restart the computer as it suggests so changes can go into effect.

        Am I all set? ???

Do you need to see the log that got saved?

        THANKS!!!!

Keep the log! It will help the experts when you post in the Computer Viruses and Spyware section (go there ASAP and post all the information you posted here plus the log you got).

That sounded exactly what I had!!   Thanks so much Highett.  :-*

Patio, I tried to follow what you had posted last. After a re-start, I ended up changing stuff around on my pc. (My AOL was not the same and us non-technical people NEED AOL. LOL!!)  So, I did the oly thing I knew how to do...a system restore to the day before.  Do you think with Avast & Malewarebytes, I will be ok? Hopefully those 2 programs do their thing behond the scenes because I do not know how to test them or make sure they are updated and running. ???

That link provided in your post is very difficuly to follow if you are a pc 'dummy' like me. (I am sure it is like kindergarten stuff to you guys)
