CD ROM tray opens / shuts randomly.
« on: September 20, 2009, 11:29:51 PM »
This CD tray does this 24 hrs a day no matter what program is running or not running. Sometimes there will be several minutes or hours between, sometimes it will close just seconds after opening (or vise versa).
I have tried to catch which process is using the CPU in Task Manager when it happens, but see nothing out of the ordinary.
Is there another way to see what's causing this?
This is on my old Celeron machine listed last in my specs.

Boot to safe mode. Does the same thing happen?

check if the mechanical switch on the drive is stuck or smth.
Please do not call your computer stupid when it breaks or lags. Computers can only do what they are programmed to. and thus, often it is the user that is stupid. GET MY DRIFT?

Often this is an indication of a virus infection.

      Yes, same in safe mode.

Not that I can tell by wiggling the switch. It works fine as far as opening and closing the tray when I push it. No excess force required nor is it overly sensitive to touce.

I have AVG free and run Windows firewall. I also have Malwarebytes (paid version) and SAS but nothing out of the ordinary found when scanning with either of them.
And when I run my HJT log with the process tool it only shows files I recognize, although it does show no firewall active. But I do have Windows firewall enabled.

Should I post my logs in the malware section anyway?

If it happens in safe mode I'm guessing it's a problem with the cd drive itself.

I hope your right, I have other optical drives. But the way it acts seems like there is a command being given rather than a fault of the drive itself.
I'm going to swap the 2 IDE optical drives physical location on the cable to see if the issue follows the drive or not. I'll post back with what I find.
As usual, thanks for the help!!!  :)
