    installing itunes causes cpu to run at 50% continuously
    « on: July 13, 2009, 10:48:24 PM »
    Yesterday i tried to plug in my ipod nano second generation like always and "nothing" itunes did not recognize it and i noticed my CPU was running at 50% even when i shut down everything, 50%.
    I tried uninstalling itunes then reinstalling it, the same thing. I completely removed itunes and plugged in my ipod, of course nothing happened but CPU stayed at low %. as soon as i reinstalled itunes the CPU went back to 50%.
    I like my ipod and would like to remedy this situation but i am stumped! any help would be greatly appreciated!

    When you say "nothing" happened, do you mean nothing happened both on the computer and the iPod?  Is the iPod showing anything on the screen at all? (plugged in, or not plugged in).

    You can also check in system profiler to see if the iPod is even showing as being hooked up on your usb port.  If you need help with that, I can assist.

    Let us know though what exactly is happening.

    Also, what OS are you on?  What type of computer are you using?  When you say the CPU is at 50%, where are you seeing this?

      I am using an HP Pavilion with Windows Vista, When i plugged in my ipod i did not see anything either on the computer or itunes, i checked the task manager and seen the 50% CPU usage.

      I thought maybe itunes got corrupted or even the ipod, i always use "safely remove hardware" before disconnecting the ipod. and i tried the ipod on another computer and it was fine.

      The ipod does show up on the device manager with this "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" i figured that was due to itunes not being on the computer.

      as soon as i install itunes the CPU will go up to 50% and stay that way even when i shut down itunes, and the ipod will not show up in itunes, if i run anything else like my DVD burner while itunes is installed the CPU will stay at 100% and i will hear the fan rev up an PC will shut itself down.

      i have been fine for months until the other day, it is driving me crazy. thank for all the help i can use it.

      What kind of iPod is it?  I would recommend putting it into disk mode (here's one example) http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363

      Once it's in disk mode, hook it up to your computer and restore the iPod using iTunes.

      This should help.

        Should itunes push your CPU to 50% even when its shut down?

        No.  iTunes shouldn't push your CPU to 50% at all unless you're on a really old machine.

          if you are running windows then;

          start-->run-->services.msc
          double click on Bonjour and disable.

          next time you restart it should be fine.
