Laptop Freeze when reading from external USB devices

    Hi All

Problem: Laptop locks up completely (only way to get out is manual kill) when reading from external usb devices.

PC: Dell Studio 1537, Core 2 Duo P8600(2.4GHz), 4Gb ddr2 ram, 500gb Samsung ATA HDD, ATI Radeon HD 3400 graphics.

Running beta version of Windows 7, however also dual boot vista and have had same problems on vista.

Prime example is when copying from external 2.5" hdd or even when watching videos from the external. It doesnt always crash, small files will normally copy ok but if the file is large will most likely crash. Not a rule though, sometimes will crash copying small files.

Have also had freeze from trying to scanning something (usb multifunction printer).

My Flashdrive also fails sometimes, as in i might be running a power point file from the flash drive and all of a sudden the program will be 'not responding' and the flash drive becomes inoperable. Only way i can get flashdrive to work again is via rebooting and then its fine.

I do not have problems writing to usb hdd, only on reading

I cannot figure out whether this is a hardware or driver problem. If i boot in safe mode i can copy as much as i want from external hdd no worries, has never crashed. Tried safe mode 'with networking' once and crashed.

So far ive speculated / researched  the following possibilities, but am not sure what the true problems is:
USB hardware or driver (driver is most up to date)
       Internal HDD fault
Dell DPC latency (read a couple of articles on this, not quite sure about it but figures with the safemode v safe mode with networking issue)

Anyway as you can imagine it does get pretty frustrating having to copy things from my external via safe mode. If anybody out there has any ideas on the problem or what like some more information i would be very grateful.

    Cheers

    Shane
