    Dodgy software?
    « on: October 09, 2009, 10:07:01 AM »
My computer is running on Windows XP, preloaded by the manufacturer, and MS Office 97 Pro and MS Publisher 2000 were installed at a later date.

After a harddrive crash and replacement by a local computer specialist it is now running MS Office 2003, including Publisher. As a result I am now getting MS's message that the software is not genuine.

I have the original discs. Can anyone advise me what my options are?  ???

You mean for Office 97 and Publisher 2000, right?  You should uninstall Office 2003 since you did not purchase it and reinstall Office 97 and Publisher 2000.  I would also ask that local computer specialist why he installed software to which you are not entitled on your computer.

dennohue, A modicum of confusion exists in my mind as to what is actually causing the problem Yes it could be the changed "office" software. But it could also be the Windows XP software. Did your "local computer specialist" use your "original discs" to reinstall the O/S or something he/she had in the shop?truenorth

        Hi truenorth,

He didn't take my XP Recovery Disc (as supplied by the manufacturer), so your observation may be correct. However, the screen message does say 'Microsoft Office'.

Clearly, the message he's seeing is due to an illegitimate installation of Office 2003.  As he said, "I am now getting MS's message that the software is not genuine."  He does not have a legal installation of Office 2003 on his computer.  He never purchased Office 2003; he has Office 97.
